BIOS SKYBLUE® TECHNOLOGY VS. TUNABLE WHITE

While traditional tunable white can change the appearance of light, ALW’s luminaires illuminated by BIOS SkyBlue® produce the healthy ‘sky blue’ light signal needed to stimulate human circadian biology.

  • Research has shown that our circadian system has its peak sensitivity in the ‘sky blue’ region near 490nm – as shown in the graph.
  • BIOS spectrum includes a distinct peak in the ‘sky blue’ region at 490nm, whereas traditional LEDs (including Tunable White) have a significant drop in this range.
  • BIOS surpasses traditional white LEDs in melanopic content, regardless of CCT – essential for circadian stimulation.

Static vs. Dynamic

ALW + BIOS IS AVAILABLE WITH BOTH STATIC (ALWAYS-ON) AND DYNAMIC (W/ BIO-DIMMING™) – ADDING THE FLEXIBILITY TO ATTENUATE THE SKY BLUE SIGNAL THROUGHOUT THE DAY

ALW + BIOS is available with both static and dynamic light engines, giving you the freedom to specify BIOS in a wide range of applications.

Static light engine solutions are where the ‘sky blue’ light signal remains on while the fixture is powered. This is better suited for applications such as offices and educational spaces, where the space is occupied only during the daylight hours.

Dynamic light engines add the ability to fine-tune and dim-down the sky blue signal, as desired. This solution is most appropriate for spaces that are inhabited during both daytime and nighttime, where you may not want the signal on at all times of the day. With BIOS Dynamic light engines, tuning out the sky blue signal results in a modest (500K) CCT shift, providing both a psychological and biological benefit without a harsh change in CCT.

Bio-Dimming™ is a proprietary module that pairs with BIOS SkyBlue® Dynamic light engines, delivering a completely customizable and spectrally-modulated light source. This module adds the ability to fine-tune the melanopic lux (i.e. the ‘sky blue’ signal), while keeping the photopic lux (the visual signal/brightness) at a constant. The Bio-Dimming controller is compatible with most single-channel drivers and standard dimming protocols (e.g. 0-10V, DMX, ELV, etc.).

ALW + BIOS lighting solutions contribute to satisfying Circadian Lighting Design Feature 54 under the WELL Building Standard™ v1 and Feature L03 under the Well Building Standard v2.
